Well, at least there was a chance my brains weren’t doomed to turn into mush. I had just been briefed that I had been in the presence of my mate all this time. Though, from the look on Gale’s face, those chances were on the slim side she felt the same way.

“All good over there, Walker?”

“I think so, yeah?” He looked back at me, shoving his glasses up his nose with his finger. How was it she got the one who seemed to know what he was doing, and I got the toothpick? I gave him a big, phony grin and resisted the urge to toss him through the window. Not out of any malice, it had just been a while since I had broken something, and I was feeling the urge.

“Great,” Wilkinson said. “Why don’t we reconvene as a group?” There were only four of us. Why did Agency guys feel a need to talk like that?

Gale and I sat on the sofa, and she pressed herself so far to the other side, it’s like she was trying to sit in the kitchen. The gap between us was like an arctic void, and I almost reached over and touched her just to rile her up. I’d take fury over indifference any day.

“So, it seems like we’ve covered the bullet points and everyone is up to speed, yeah?” Both Agents stood in front of us, but Wilkinson was clearly taking the lead. I had to admire his presumed dominance. That kind of thing was invaluable when it came to getting the job done.

“When do we leave?” I asked. It seemed like an innocuous enough question, but the tundra princess next to me tensed up at it.

“Tonight, apparently. I’ve got until 8 to get my whole life sorted out, huh?”

“There are actually aspects about your stay on Tennant D-10 that I think will particularly appeal to you.” Wilkinson rattled all this out like everything was a foregone conclusion, but the mention of our destination struck a chord with me.

“Hang on a second,” I leaned forward. “Tennant D-10? Isn’t that some abandoned jungle planet?”

“Correct.”

“I’d always heard it was Caelum. Surfing, drinks and shit like that. Why the hell are we going to a place like that? I’ve heard there was Zanthi military activity there.” It’s hard to say what bothered me so much. I’d much rather get up to tactical strikes than lie around on the beach like an idiot. That said, it felt oddly like a cheat to miss out on a bunch of free drinks.

“Given Miss Lee’s situation,” Walker said, “transporting the two of you to a known Gamma resort seemed inadvisable.” He looked awfully proud of himself for piping in, but I was unimpressed.

“And what situation is that, exactly?” Judging from her tone, she wasn’t having it either.

“What Walker means is, with the current situation with the Zanthi, maneuvering your courtship period to a less public location would be best for your safety. Not to mention the other guests at the Caelum resort.
